What is it?
Fireflies.ai is an AI meeting assistant: it joins your Zoom, Meet, or Teams calls, transcribes them, and produces summaries, action items, and a searchable archive of everything said. It’s been around long enough to be boring in the good way — the transcription pipeline is mature and the integration list is long.
The headline: unlimited free transcription
Most competitors meter free transcription per month (Otter gives 300 minutes, Notta 120). Fireflies doesn’t — free accounts transcribe without a minutes cap. The business model catch is storage: free plans keep roughly 400 minutes of past meetings, and older recordings age out. AI summary credits are also limited on free.
In practice this means the free plan is a genuine working tier, not a demo. You lose the archive, not the capability. If your workflow is “transcribe the meeting, pull the action items into your task manager, move on,” you may simply never need to pay.
What Pro adds
Pro runs $10 per seat/month billed annually and mainly buys you room: about 8,000 storage minutes per seat, video recording, and unlimited integrations. Fireflies also claims 100+ transcription languages — the widest coverage in its category, and our spot-checks of user reports back the quality for major languages.
Where it falls short
- The bot joins as a participant. Everyone sees “Fireflies.ai Notetaker” enter the call. Some clients find it intrusive; you’ll want to warn externals (and in many jurisdictions you must — recording consent laws apply to AI notetakers too).
- Summary quality varies with meeting structure. Rambling calls produce rambling action items. Structured agendas summarize well.
- Storage math on free. 400 minutes is roughly two weeks of heavy meetings. If you need the archive, that’s the real product they’re selling you.

Who should (and shouldn’t) use it
Use it if you’re a team that transcribes a lot and wants to trial properly before paying — nothing else lets you run unlimited real meetings through it for free. Skip it if you’re a solo user who wants a permanent free archive: Fathom is the better free fit for individuals, and if your meetings are mostly non-English it’s worth also trialing Notta against it on your specific language.
