Otter vs Notta (2026): Which Cheap AI Transcriber Should You Pick?

Otter and Notta both price their entry paid tier at roughly $8 a month if you pay annually, so the sticker price won’t decide this one for you. What actually separates them: how each free plan fails, how many languages each one understands, and — the part most comparisons skip — a legal cloud over one and a billing-complaint pattern over the other.

The numbers side by side

At full price, Otter Pro is $16.99/user/month ($8.33 billed annually at $99.96/year); Notta Pro is $13.99/month ($8.17 billed annually at $97.99/year). Close enough that neither wins on price alone.

Free plans fail in opposite ways

Otter’s free plan gives you more minutes overall — 300 a month — but caps any single conversation at 30 minutes and limits you to three imported audio/video files for the life of the account, not per month. A one-hour meeting simply won’t fit.

Notta’s free plan gives you fewer minutes — 120 a month — but the real constraint is the 3-minute-per-conversation cap. That’s enough to sanity-check transcription accuracy on your own voice; it’s not enough to take notes on an actual meeting. Notta’s free tier is a demo, not a workflow.

If you need to actually use the free plan for real (short) meetings, Otter’s is more usable day to day. If you just want to test accuracy before paying, Notta’s works fine for that narrower purpose.

Languages: this is the whole decision for a lot of people

Otter supports six languages as of mid-2026 (English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Chinese Simplified). Notta lists 58 supported languages. If any real share of your meetings happen outside those six Otter covers, Otter isn’t a candidate — the comparison collapses to Notta versus something else, most likely Fireflies, which claims 100+ languages and has a genuinely unmetered free transcription tier (storage, not minutes, is the limit). Paid tiers: read the fine print on both

Otter Pro gives you 1,200 minutes a month. Worth knowing before you subscribe: Otter cut this down from a prior 6,000-minute Pro allowance without lowering the price, and it’s a live sore point in user reviews — heavy users (five-plus meetings a day) report running out inside two weeks, with no rollover and no way to buy overage minutes.

Notta Pro gives you 1,800 minutes a month with a 5-hour-per-recording cap — roomier than Otter’s, and no equivalent “we quietly cut this” complaint currently attached to it. Real-time translation and bilingual transcription cost extra on top, from about $6/month.

The part most reviews leave out: trust problems, not just features

Both companies have something you should know before handing over a card.

Otter is a named defendant in a consolidated federal class action, In re Otter.AI Privacy Litigation (N.D. Cal., case no. 5:25-cv-06911), alleging its meeting bot records and transcribes participants without the consent required under the federal Wiretap Act and California’s CIPA. A ruling on Otter’s motion to dismiss was pending as of mid-2026. Otter disputes the claims, arguing its assistant acts as a tool for the meeting host rather than an independent eavesdropper. Nothing here means Otter is illegal to use, but if you record meetings in two-party-consent states or with external participants, it’s a live legal question you’re inheriting, not a settled one.

Notta has a persistent billing-complaint pattern. As of early 2026, roughly 86% of its Trustpilot reviews were 1-star, and Trustpilot itself added a warning label to Notta’s profile after removing suspected fake positive reviews. The recurring complaint: the 3-day Pro trial (7-day for Business) requires a card upfront, and users report being charged the full annual rate — commonly $97.99 — with little warning and slow refunds when they try to walk it back. Neither issue is disqualifying by itself, but they point in different directions: Otter’s risk is external (consent law, out of your control once you hit record), Notta’s risk is transactional (a trial you can sidestep entirely by never entering a card).

Our pick

If your meetings are strictly English and light in volume, Otter’s free plan and familiar interface are fine, but go in aware of the consent litigation, especially if you record calls with people outside your own company.

If any meetings happen outside English, or you want more free room to test before paying, Notta wins on capability — just use the always-free plan (no card, 120 min/month) to judge accuracy on your language first, and skip the carded trial entirely. Never let Notta hold a card number until you’ve already decided you want Pro.

If you want neither company’s baggage, Fireflies’ free plan has no minutes cap at all (only storage), broader language claims, and no comparable billing or consent controversy currently attached to it — worth a look before you commit to either.
